Founded in 2003, Balsam Farms is a ~200 acre farm on the South Fork of the East End of Long Island. We grow a mix of vegetables, fruits, herbs, cut flowers, and grains. While we are not “certified organic,”  we grow the vast majority of our produce according to established OMRI-approved practices. Balsam Farms is best known for our original open-air farm stand in Amagansett, but we also have an indoor market across the Napeague stretch in Montauk.  

We are currently looking for hard-working, motivated candidates to join our team for the upcoming 2026 season!

Position Description:

Farm Stand Team Members report directly to our Farm Stand Managers and are fundamental to our retail operations.

Farm Stand Team Members wash and prepare fresh produce for sale, keep displays stocked and customer-ready, operate the register accurately and efficiently, assist customers with product inquiries, and consistently maintain a clean and organized work environment. Daily responsibilities at the farm stand will vary by shift, season, and experience, though all applicants must be comfortable in customer-facing positions and eager to provide excellent customer service.   

Our patrons count on us to answer product-specific questions, give tips and tricks, respond to pricing inquiries, and answer myriad questions about the farm.  Sharing your own interest and experience with local agriculture, food, and cooking are a fun and important part of the job. 

Though this is a seasonal position, there is significant opportunity for growth if the applicant is willing to work the full farm season (May – November) and/or for multiple seasons. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with daily opening/closing tasks (setting up and breaking down displays, restocking products, cleaning, etc)
  • Unload and process daily produce and outside vendor deliveries, rotating product as needed. 
  • Wash, pack, and prepare produce for retail sale, following the farm’s standard operating procedures. 
  • Fully stock and monitor displays for quality throughout the day and refresh or replace products as needed.  
  • Provide product information and field customer questions accurately and in a friendly manner
  • Operate the register/POS accurately and efficiently, including both cash and credit card payments
  • Maintain a clean and presentable work area (front and back of house)
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with other team members and management to complete assigned tasks

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Experience in customer service preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and professionalism
  • Strong time-management skills and consistent attention to detail
  • Flexible, creative, and able to work both independently and as part of a team

Position Details:

  • Part-time (20 + hours/week) or full-time (40 hours/week)
  • Start Date: Mid-May 2026; End Date: November 2026.   (Shorter employment periods are also available. All applicants must be available to work at least through the end of August)
  • Morning (8am-3/4pm), mid-day (10am-6pm), and afternoon (11am/12pm-7pm/8pm) shifts. Due to the seasonal nature of the farm, schedules may change week to week based on business needs. Reliable team members who perform well consistently may be offered a set, consistent weekly schedule. Afternoon/closing availability is preferred and applicants who can regularly work closing shifts are encouraged to apply. 

Compensation/Benefits:

The Wash/Pack Manager oversees the intake and processing of all fresh produce from the fields each day, leading a small pack team of 5-8 staff members. In addition to supervising team members and supporting new employee training, the Wash/Pack Manager is responsible for ensuring a high standard of produce quality and maintaining accurate, efficient packing operations. 

This role also includes managing packing station supply inventory, coordinating with delivery drivers and field crew leaders, and communicating staff performance notes and operational issues to upper management. The ideal candidate has strong time-management skills, communicates effectively, and stays calm in a fast-paced work environment. 

Though this is a seasonal position, there is opportunity for growth if the applicant is willing to work for multiple seasons. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Help unload and process daily produce deliveries, rotating product as needed
  • Coordinate with field crew, delivery drivers, and farm leadership to ensure produce deliveries arrive at the correct locations and are rotated properly 
  • Assign wash/pack tasks to Farm Stand Team Members; guide execution and confirm completion, adjusting priorities based on daily/hourly business needs
  • Oversee the wash/pack station and ensure team members work quickly and efficiently while maintaining product quality and packing accuracy
  • Ensure packing standards are followed consistently (pack weights, bunch sizes, packing material, etc.)
  • Coordinate with the stocking team to ensure smooth product flow from back-of-house to the front-of-house, moving product from daily deliveries through the wash/pack station and onto display as efficiently as possible 
  • Prioritize wash/pack tasks based on the farm stand’s needs, weather, and time of day
  • Communicate station status (what’s done/what’s needed) to managers throughout the day 
  • Monitor cooler organization, rotation, and function; ensure adherence to FIFO (First In, First Out) and report any issues promptly 
  • Perform frequent quality checks of incoming and packed produce and inform management of any issues
  • Maintain inventory of packing materials and wash/pack station supplies; communicate shortages and assist with reordering as needed
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, in accordance with farm procedures
  • Train and supervise new hires at the wash/pack station, ensuring they follow the farm’s standard operating procedures
  • Communicate closely and work directly with the extended management team to problem-solve and stay up to date with farm priorities 
  • Report directly to the Farm Stand General Managers regarding staffing notes, quality concerns, and inventory issues 
  • Coordinate with the CSA Program Manager and other Farm Stand Managers on a daily basis to ensure smooth operations 
  • Assist management with other daily farm stand operations as needed, including all opening and closing activities related to assigned shifts

The Farm Stand Closing Shift Supervisor is responsible for ensuring an efficient and thorough closing each day. This role acts as the lead-on-duty during closing shifts and is responsible for maintaining the farm’s standards of customer service, product quality, and register accuracy during this time. The Closing Shift Supervisor directs the Farm Stand Team Members through  all closing procedures (cleaning, restocking, register deposits), ensures closing checklists are completed accurately and that the stand is ready for opening the next day. 

During operating hours, the shift-supervisor works alongside other team members to support day-to-day farm stand operations. During this time they may wash and prepare fresh produce for sale, keep displays stocked and customer-ready, operate the register accurately and efficiently, assist customers with product inquiries, and consistently maintain a clean and organized work environment. 

This role includes inventory oversight, daily ordering of farm produce, preparing register deposits, and communicating staff performance notes and operational issues to upper management. The ideal candidate takes initiative, stays calm in a fast-paced work environment, and has a strong interest in cooking, food, and local agriculture. 

Though this is a seasonal position, there is opportunity for growth if the applicant is willing to work for multiple seasons. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead farm stand closing operations (breaking down displays, restocking products, cleaning, resetting the stand for the next day, closing registers, etc)
  • Assign daily closing checklists to team members and ensure tasks are completed accurately and efficiently

Our patrons count on us to answer product-specific questions, give tips and tricks, respond to pricing inquiries, and answer myriad questions about Balsam Farms on the whole.  Sharing your own interest and experience with local agriculture, food, and cooking are a fun and important part of the job. 

Though this is a seasonal position (June – Labor Day), there are—for the right candidates— periodic opportunities to start a little earlier and extend the length of employment a little later into the fall.  

Responsibilities:
